Fall 2023
Thursday Afternoon STEM Workshops:
Participants will engage in a wide range of STEM topics that vary by day. Please note that in case of severe inclement weather, the program will be moved indoors to the Youth Center. Time: 4:45 - 5:45 P.M. each Thursday
Thursday, September 14 - Things that Fly Students will explore three types of flying machines from the paper airplane and hoop glider to a glider designed all on their own.
Thursday, September 21 - Chemistry 102 Students will explore chemical reactions to observe changes in matter as well as how some chemicals react to one another! Experiments include Elephant Toothpaste, Mentos and Coke, slime, and baking soda & vinegar reactions.
Thursday, September 28 - Nature Walks Students will explore the local nature walking trail to create a birdhouse from materials only found in the area. Students will then test if their birdhouse can hold weight.
Thursday, October 5 - Kites Students will explore the mathematical accuracy of Kite shapes as they structure their own high flying kite.
Thursday, October 12 - Windmills Students will create their own windmills where they will harness the wind to power their windmill to spin. (could be used as a water mill as well!)
Thursday, October 19 - Parachutes Students will learn the importance and structure of parachutes and how they help humans and cargo safely land to earth.
STEM Election Day Workshops
There’s no school today so take the opportunity to join us for a day of fun-filled STEM workshops! With a morning workshop focused on Biomedical Science and an afternoon workshop for Robotics Exploration, there will be plenty of exploration. If you register for both the morning and afternoon, be sure to pack a lunch to enjoy from 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. between the workshops. Both workshops will be led by experienced STEM educators who will adjust program instruction to meet the needs of all participants.
Biomedical Science Workshop: Time - 9:00 - 12:00 P.M. Participants will explore the world of biomedicine using the elements of the biology discipline to enhance medical care. Projects include creating a working leg brace, making your own stethoscope and building an articulated hand!
Robotics Exploration Workshop: Time - 12:30 - 3:30 P.M. Participants will explore with the UB TECH robotics software building various robots that accomplish different tasks. Students will also explore and code the Sphero and Ollie robots.
Engineering Thursdays
Thursdays - 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16
4:30 - 5:45 pm
Ages: 8 to 13
This is a fun program for all who are interested in using engineering, math and science principles to build real world models of various structures such as bridges, skyscrapers and miniature cars.
