Mountain Mist Day Camp!

Picture
CT STEM Academy has partnered with the Meriden YMCA Mountain Mist Day Camp to offer STEM Camps!  STEM Camps are open to campers who have completed grades 3 through 8 as of the school year ending in June 2020.  Camps run for 2 week sessions starting in June.  For more information regarding the camps, please visit the Meriden Mountain Mist YMCA website.

NEW 2020 CAMP SESSIONS NOW AVAILABLE!
See below for offerings.

Nature Science Camp *New Canoeing Program for 2019*
Session 1: June 17 - June 28, 2019

Have you ever thought about the 60 acres of Mountain Mist as an outdoor science classroom? During this exciting nature science adventure, we will explore nature and become “Backpack Naturalists.” Each day campers will hike and note interesting insects, trees, plants, and wildlife while keeping a scientist’s notebook of their discoveries. These daily “EcoWalks” will include visits to the frog pond!

Campers will also design and conduct investigations that include building a mini-greenhouse, comparing the growth of earth seeds to seeds that have flown in space, and creating a solar oven. Campers will also take a field trip and visit a local park to compare and contrast the environment with Mountain Mist, and canoe on a local pond. During all of these experiences, instruction will be given on how to use science equipment such as hand lenses, microscopes, and digital technology.Come join our “Backpack Naturalists” and become a member of Meriden’s Young Scientists.

Space Camp
Session 2: July 1 - 12, 2019. No camp July 4.

Developed with NASA based activities, this camp explores what it really means to be an astronaut and a aerospace engineer combining science, engineering, and math all in one. Students will be building, launching, and exploring the various structures launched into space while thinking about the scientific factors that go into real NASA space explorations. This camp introduces children to the principles of engineering through hands-on activities that apply the engineering design process to solve problems and generate solutions. The emphasis is on students understanding that engineers must imagine and plan before they begin to create and test. This camp will include basic rocketry as well.

STEM Robotics Camp
Session 3: July 15 - 26, 2019

Do you like to solve problems? Are you interested in learning how to code a robot? During this session, we will be exploring coding and robotics with ozobots. Ozobots are small hand held robots that participants will code to complete simple tasks. Did you know that computing related jobs is one of the fastest grow-ing STEM related careers? Participants will code a robot both on paper with markers, as well as online through a web-based pro-gram called Ozoblockly. There will also be Lego Robotics offered where the great minds at LEGO have provided the tools and means for us to use their fun kits to do more advanced STEM and computer science. LEGO Mindstorms are a great facet for students to explore a different side of robotics that includes interesting building challenges, programming, and innovative thinking with high interest materials.

Chemistry Camp
Session 4: July 29—August 9
Explore a different side of STEM with this great program centered around Chemistry. Participants who join will have the chance to see how the properties of substances can change, react, and create substances in a “make and take” format.  This makes for some very interesting projects in a more in-depth analysis of how chemistry can really be exciting!

Sports Science
Session 5: Aug.12 — 23, 2019

Do you like various and wonder about the science behind these sports? Come join us for a different view of your favorite sports such as football, baseball, soccer, golf and much more. Have fun learning how science impacts the sports you play or just love watching! No experience in particular sports is required to attend this camp.
